Kokutai-ji Temple

A Buddhist temple located in Ota, Takaoka City. The temple was founded in 1304 by the priest Jiunmyoi. The head temple of Rinzai Kokutai-ji Zen Buddhism, in the Meiji period, such prestigious personages as philosopher Kitaro Nishida and Buddhist scholar T.T. Suzuki meditated here. During a festival to commemorate the passing of the temple's founder held on June 2nd and 3rd, Zen priests wearing traditional wicker hoods provide shakuhachi flute performances.
