Kasatori Pass Pine Trees

Row of trees
Kasatori Avenue of Pines is about a 30-minute drive from the Saku Interchange or 60 minutes from the Suwa Interchange, running from about 1 kilometer west of the old Ashidajuku post station on the Nakayama Road (one of the five great roads of the Edo period) to Kasatori Pass. The Avenue of Pines is about 2 kilometers long with about 60 pines. It is said that in 1602, the shogunate distributed 753 pine seedlings to the Komoro clan and that they were planted in the surrounding villages. The pines are anywhere from 150 to more than 300 years old, and even now, one can appreciate that classic scenery. The Avenue of Pines has been designated a Prefectural Natural Monument, and it is being protected and enhanced as part of Matsu Namiki Park.
