Situated along National Route 241 in Konan, Ashoro Town, Ashoro County, Hokkaido Prefecture. This museum collects and studies paleontological materials with a focus on the fossils of marine mammals excavated in Ashoro. Exploring the plant and animal life of Ashoro as well as tracing the history of the planet, exhibits include the skeletons of a variety of whales as well as examples of the extinct, mysterious Desmostylus. The museum also offers curator guided tours and activities like a miniature dig and replica making.

東京科学博物館、道内他所の博物館でも紹介されている足寄産の古生物「アショロア」に惹かれ、極寒の中を歩いた末に到着…敷地内のアショロアの像が何とも可愛らしくて、疲れと寒さもちょっと緩んだ気持ちになりました。

足寄町の市街地の外れにある「足寄動物化石博物館」にやってきました。
連れの希望やってきて、私自身はあまり期待していなかったのですが、いざ、館内に入ってみると展示された、デスモスチルスや鯨の骨格標本が圧巻です。入館料もお手頃な割には結構、展示物が充実していて意外と楽しめました。お土産コーナーで、おそろいの化石Tシャツも購入しました-。
