Situated along National Route 241 in Konan, Ashoro Town, Ashoro County, Hokkaido Prefecture. This museum collects and studies paleontological materials with a focus on the fossils of marine mammals excavated in Ashoro. Exploring the plant and animal life of Ashoro as well as tracing the history of the planet, exhibits include the skeletons of a variety of whales as well as examples of the extinct, mysterious Desmostylus. The museum also offers curator guided tours and activities like a miniature dig and replica making.

勉強になったのは、復元の際に解釈差がある事。たしか、3パターンある例が展示されていました。一番気になったのは、指の本数…。方や指4本、方や指5本とか。えっ？そんなにブレるの？正解は、誰にも分からないけど復元は、正解ではない事。たしかに、恐竜なんて誰も見た事ないよね。
化石発掘体験が楽しめる

アンモナイトなどの化石、タンザナイトや水晶などの石、小さな欠片がたくさん入ったミニミニから選べます。何が出るかわからないガチャガチャ感覚がたまりません。化石のことや発掘に関することなど、学芸員さんにいろいろ質問すると、とても詳しく教えてくれるので、家族みんなで勉強になります。
こんなところに化石博物館があるとは驚きです。

ミステリーツアーで初めて行ったがかなりのボリュームのある展示物でした。こんな山奥に化石が出るとは知りませんでした。館長さんがユニークな説明をしてくれます。もう一度ゆっくり館長さんの話を聞きたいです。
