A theater built to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Nippon Life Insurance Company. The building is an outstanding example of Showa period architecture and visiting to view it alone can be worth the trip. A great number of performances are held here sponsored by major theater companies such as Toho and Shochiku. The theater also sponsors events such as the Nissay Masterpiece Series of free theater productions for children and youths, the Nissay Family Festival designed to be fun for parents and children, and the Nissay Opera program of authentic opera, and in turn the theater has become a true center for the performing arts.

昭和を代表する建築物

日比谷公園から通りを挟んだ向かい側に、日生劇場がありました。建築家村野藤吾氏が設計した、昭和を代表する建築物である日生劇場を見てみたいと思って訪ねました。この建物は１９６３年ですから、今から６０近く前につくられています。淡い赤みがかった石を使った重厚な外装や、複雑に作り込まれている壁面など、昭和を代表するにふさわしい建物でした。
建築物としての高い価値

日比谷公園の南向かい側、帝国ホテルのとなりに、日生劇場がありました。こちらは劇場ですが、私は建築物としての日生劇場に興味を引かれました。この劇場が完成したのは１９６３年ですから、今から６０年近く前です。昭和を代表する建築の一つとも言われている建築物です。重厚な外装を持ち、劇場入り口のあたりはギリシア神殿を思わせる柱と白大理石の床が、素晴らしいなあと思いました。
