Omotegoten Garden of Old Tokushima Castle

Garden
This garden was designated by the national government as a Place of Scenic Beauty in 1941. It was built as the garden for the living room and the front drawing room of the Hachisuka clan, the lords of the former Tokushima domain. Landscaped by military commander and master of the tea ceremony Ueda Soko, the famous garden conveys the style of the Momoyama period. It includes two different gardens: a Karesansui garden which uses only gravels, rocks and trees to express nature and a Tsukiyama-sensui garden with rocks representing mountains and actual pond filled with water. The Karesansui garden is a Kansho-shiki garden, designed to be enjoyed from a single perspective. On the other hand, the Tsukiyama-sensui garden is a Chisen kaiyu-shiki garden, which allows visitors to enjoy the view while strolling along a path around the pond.
