Taito City Edo Shitamachi Traditional Craft Museum (台東区立下町風俗資料館)

4.0

Reference/Local/Exhibition/Literature Museum

This museum located in Ueno-onshi-koen Park opened in 1980 as a place to teach future generations about old Tokyo and its shitamachi (working-class urban neighborhoods) as much of old Tokyo was lost due to massive destruction caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the wartime fires of 1945, and the reconstruction following these disasters. The first floor exhibits are part of a recreated shitamachi from the Taisho period with remnants of the Edo scenery including a nagaya (long wooden house), small-time candy store and a rickshaw. The second floor exhibits present items such as implements of daily life and documents mainly pertaining to the Taito City.

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
