Uwajima Castle宇和島城

Historical Monument

This castle was constructed by Todo Takatora in 1601. The outer walls of the castle are a pentagon with irregular sides when they are viewed from the sky; it is a castle where Takatora’s ingenuity can be seen everywhere (He was said to be an expert on castle fortification). The white walled castle keep is beautiful against the blue sky and the green mountains, and the castle is also called Tsurushima castle. The castle’s keep is one of 12 keeps in existence and has also been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

A short walk from the train station. A nice, huff & puff hike up and easy concrete pathway about halfway. Then you’ll need to walk on dirt/gravel pathways and stone stairs to get to the top. Nice...

Spent a number of years in Ehime and have visited Uwajima Castle 3 times now. It's not the biggest of castles but it's a goodie. Definitely worth the visit, and why not take in Ozu Castle to the...

Stretched across the northwest corner of Shikoku island, Ehime is a nature-rich prefecture boasting beautiful coastlines and a rural center where mountains play host to 26 of the Buddhist temples that make up the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Matsuyama is home to an original post-feudal castle as well as Dogo Onsen, one of the country’s oldest natural hot springs. The northern city of Imabari marks the entrance to the Shimano Kaido, a road that crosses six spectacular bridges and several islands, forming a route between Shikoku and mainland Honshu.
