Motomachi Park
From the Edo period to the Showa period this was the center of government that supported Hakodate with buildings such as the Hakodate magistrate’s office and the Hakodate branch of the Kaitakushi (Hokkaido Development Commission). Inside the park are four statues of the “Shitenno” (four leaders that contributed to Hakodate’s formation) and the monument details their achievements. Currently the park is used as a venue for charity events and flea markets, and in August the World Music and Dance Festival is held here. In the early summer the park is loved by Hakodate’s city dwellers for its roses that bloom profusely.
