Kitajima Saburo Memorial Museum

Memorial Hall

This is a hands-on museum that tells the path to glory of Saburo Kitajima, who is the one of most famous Japanese enka folk singers. The museum is full of highlights, including a section that reproduces the location where Kitajima spent his youth in Hakodate and a theater zone where a robot version of the singer performs his famous song “Matsuri.” There are also plenty of original goods, including doll cakes baked in the shape of his face and Daiginjo sake made with references to his famous song “Otoko no Namida (Man’s tear).” The museum is located seven minutes from Hakodate Station by local train.

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
