Yes, the ropeway is closed. It looks like, that this will remain for quite a long time. It seems to be due to both:the Kumamoto earthquake and the Mt. Aso eruption two years back.

Nice view into the crater. Car access makes the ropeway unnecessary. View is good if there is no warning.
