阿弥陀仏を本尊とする浄土宗の寺院で、創建は平安時代後期とされるが、現在の本堂は火災の後、江戸時代の1814(文化11)年に再建されたという。勝山藩主三浦家の菩提寺。入り口に説明が貼ってあったが、平成8年、のちに首相となる鳩山由紀夫氏と文相などを歴任する弟の邦夫氏が突然この寺を訪れ、先祖の墓前で民主党立ち上げを誓った。鳩山家の先祖は江戸詰めの美作勝山藩士だったという。
