- One of Kyoto’s most stunning spiritual sites, Byodo-in Temple is a beautiful example of the delicate Japanese architecture known as Buddhist Pure Land (Jodo). It was originally built as a countryside villa in 998 for politician Fujiwara no Michinaga. Today you can get a closer look at the site by signing up for a short tour through the Phoenix Hall, the temple’s most spectacular building. During spring the area is particularly beautiful as it’s surrounding by soft pink cherry blossoms in full bloom.
