- Island
- During the Meiji era to the Showa era, this island became one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Hashima was a coalmine city that flourished during the modernization of the 1940s. When the coal ran out the island was abandoned, and between 1974 – 2009 it was closed off from visitors. Today it's open for guests, however to access it you have to sign up for an organized tour. Contact the Nagasaki Municipal Government to book a trip.
