A sightseeing plan from Enoshima to Kamakura via the scenic Enoden Train

This is an introduction of a one day trip plan using the Enoden Railway one day ticket. Visitors should be able to discover the new face of the town travelling around the picturesque scenery on the coast between Enoshima and Kamakura using the “Noriorikun” ticket which costs 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children.

  Residing on Enoshima island, just off the coast, Enoshima Shrine is actually comprised of three shrines, Hetsunomiya, Nakatsunomiya and Okutsunomiya each positioned on a different corner of the island. Making a loop around the island is the best way to visit each of the shrines and admire the island’s other interesting pockets.

  One of Enoshima’s most iconic restaurants Uomitei is a must visit spot add to your itinerary. With a history that goes back around 140 years, to call it well established would be an understatement.   Not to be confused with the Kyoto temple of the same name, Manpuku-ji in Kamakura is a stunning temple covered in ornate Kamakura-style engravings. Established in 744 by Buddhist priest Gyogi, its main purpose was to be a place of worship for the statue of the Buddha of healing. Here you’ll also find an ancient statue of the famous Jizo, the guardian of children. Wander around the site and you’ll witness a various selection of flowers that bloom throughout the year.

  One of the main stations along the Enoden line, Kamakurakokomae Station is most well known for featuring in the opening sequence of “Slam Dunk” a popular anime and manga series that first started in the 1990s. Following the journey of Hanamichi Sakuragi and his crew of basketball loving friends, the series was so ubiquitous here in Japan that this station is still frequented by culture fanatics and photographers almost 30 years after its debut.

  Arguably the most visited tourist attraction on the Enoden line, the Kamakura Great Buddha, also known as the Kamakura Daibutsu is a towering 11.4 meter tall statue of Amida Buddha which sits on the Kotokuin Temple grounds. Originally cast in 1252, the temples that once housed the Buddha were destroyed, so since 1495 he’s been sitting in the open air battling the elements. He’s the country’s tallest bronze Buddha statue (the tallest can be found in Nara). Leading to the temple area you’ll find streets lined with various souvenir stores also worth visiting.

  First stepping off the train at Kamakura Station you’ll be greeted by the torii gates that lead to Komachi Street, Kamakura’s main shopping strip.
