Within the coal-black wooden station building, designed by local architect Arata Isozaki in 1990, is a waiting room that doubles as an art gallery.   Seen as the symbol of Yufuin, Lake Kinrin is a mystical lake that is fed in part from hot and cold springs at the lake bottom. The name Kinrin, which literally means “golden scales,” is said to have been coined by Mori Kuso, a Confucian scholar from the early Meiji period (1868-1912).
