100% natural fruit juice now available at a train station near you
Japan is known worldwide for its vast train network and the ubiquity of vending machines, and rightly so. JR East is the world’s largest train company in terms of passenger-kilometers, and there are almost million vending machines spread across the archipelago. A subsidiary of JR East, JR East Water Business manages the vending machines spread across the train stations of JR East, providing a convenient access to a cool drink in summer or a nice, warm coffee during cold winter.
While you are traveling around on the JR train network, look out for the white acure brand of vending machines located exclusively in JR East stations, and the black innovative vending machines boasting a large digital touchscreen display.
The difference between the acure vending machines and regular vending machines is the variety of drinks available. Instead of just tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, there is also fruit juice - taking advantage of the seasonality and diversity of fruits produced in Japan. The acure vending machines have exclusive range of drinks not available at other shops or vending machines.
Aomori Apple Juice Series
One such product that is representative of the seasonality of drinks is the Aomori Apple Juice series. Aomori, located in northern Honshu, is well-known domestically as Japan’s largest producer of apples, and the Aomori juice series is created in collaboration with JA Aoren, an agricultural cooperative,
using cosmetically damaged fruits that otherwise wouldn’t be sold at local groceries and supermarkets.
This 100% pure juice is not made from concentrate, and contains no additives or preservatives. The juice is produced using a specially developed ‘airtight juicing method’, which grates the apples in a sealed machine. When compared to other juice-extraction methods, this machine is completely sealed and contains only nitrogen, meaning antioxidants aren’t necessary, and the natural flavor of the apple is retained.
The apples used in the current lines include Tsugaru(つがる) – cross between golden delicious and Jonathan apple (kogyoku紅玉) with intensely sweet flavor, Orin(王林) -a cross between golden delicious and indo apple varieties with big on sweetness and third most produced apple in Japan, Fuji(ふじ) – an apple available all year round and most commonly grown varieties in Japan with mild and balanced sweet-tart flavor, Toki(トキ) - an Orin and Fuji hybrid with sweet flavor mixed with a tart, Jonagold(ジョナゴールド) – popular in the US and Europe, a cross between a Jonathan and a Golden Delicious with a balanced sweet tart flavor and aromatic honey like scent well blended from its parents.
The juices are available for 170 yen at JR East train stations and platforms - just look out for the distinctive acure vending machine, and see what selection of apple juices are available.
