Cycling in Yokohama

NAVITIME TRAVEL EDITOR

Yokohama has always been a lively port city, and there’s plenty to see in its enviable location along the ocean. The buildings in Yokohama are quite large and stretch for long city blocks, though, so if the weather’s nice then bikes are the preferred mode of transportation. We’ll be using the electric-assisted bikes of Bike Share to make the rounds for a fun half-day in the city. After enjoying some time in Minato Mirai, you can easily make it to Yokohama Station on a bike. Feel the cool ocean breeze as we cycle a 7 km course through Yokohama.

    Start: 11:00 a.m. Chinatown

    Yokohama's specialty, Kiyoken Siumai.

A trip to Yokohama often means a trip to Chinatown. You can’t miss this vibrant neighborhood and its wide assortment of delicious eateries. It does get really crowded around lunch, though, so showing up on the earlier side of the rush is highly recommended. Arriving at 11 a.m. will let you figure out where to grab lunch without worrying about the crowds. You can have a nice meal to fuel up for the ride ahead.
Yokohama Park is nearby Chinatown, and there are lots of Docomo Cycle Ports around the park area to choose from. Once you grab a bike, it’s off we go!

12:30 p.m. Osanbashi and Zou no Hana Park

    Osanbashi Pier

    Osanbashi Pier

Osanbashi Pier is Yokohama’s International Passenger Terminal—the place where giant cruise ships dock. Aside from being awed by the massive ships entering and exiting the harbor, the pier itself is a sight. It has a unique and modern wooden design inspired by waves, which sets it apart from similar structures. The views of Yokohama and the Bay Bridge from the pier are great for group pictures, too.
Zou no Hana Park is a low-key open space with great bay views. The name means “elephant’s trunk,” and the zou-no-hana ice cream from the cafe is shaped like an elephant, for those perfect Insta-pics!

The huge buildings in this area are spaced pretty close together, so there’ll be some stopping and starting while you ride along. But the distance is actually quite far to walk, and the train stations aren’t exactly close, either. So you’ll be glad to have a bike for this leg of the journey.

    Cup Noodles Museum

    Cup Noodles Museum

Another must-see on your Yokohama outing is the Cup Noodles Museum. Inside the museum you’ll find not only exhibits on the history of cup noodles, but you can also try your hand at making Chicken Ramen from scratch or create an original Cup Noodles with your very own design and ingredients! Then there’s the Cup Noodles Park, where you can experience quirky slides and play areas simulating what noodles go through in a factory. It’s all great fun, and you’ll come away with a newfound appreciation for the ubiquitous foodstuff. There’s nothing like bringing home a cup of noodles you created yourself!
