Inside Kairakuen Garden, a spacious traditional Japanese garden, every late February to early March, it is covered in delicate pink during the Mito Plum Blossom Festival. To celebrate and welcome the coming Spring, the park’s 3,000 plum trees are in full bloom. Compared to previous years, the festival undergoes a change and will be held in collaboration with a popular art group “teamLab” using digital technology. The special outdoor exhibition “teamLab Digitized Kairakuen Garden” will take place after dark with the garden beautifully lit up.

During the day time, the traditional garden will have its zen moment of peace and silence but when the plums are in full bloom, the sound of the shutters can be heard here and there.
While the garden gives beautiful arches of pink, white and red and the views are already spectacular enough, the Mito Plum Festival held this year will even be more magical.![]()

In the past, through a project in which nature itself becomes art in its “natural” state without destroying it through non-material digital technology, teamLab has conducted the "Digitized Nature" art project in places rich in nature, such as "Mifuneyama Rakuen'' in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture. teamLab, a collaborative creative group that brings together professionals from various fields of practice like CG animators, artists, etc., has now taken this project over at Mito Ume Festival. Digitized Kairakuen Garden held at night during this festival will have various kinds of plum trees transformed into an interactive light art space that changes its displays depending on the presence of people.

When tradition meets the new, this long standing Kairakuen Garden built in 1842 which is designated as one of Japan’s best landscape gardens will transform into an enchanted forest by night with mysterious eggs, unseen water in the rock, parades of rabbits and other animals and sure to give a whole new image to this historic garden.
