Tokyo Bay has long been famed for its iconic yakatabune, the long dinner boats that cruise up and down the Sumida River and around the bay, lighting up the water with their red lanterns. While definitely an incredible experience to have, the yakatabune are perfect for couples and groups and less about going out to party. Luckily you have some options for a boat party that has lots of people and won’t break the bank.

  • The Tokyo Bay Night Cruise, running every summer, is all about getting out and having fun. Open through July and September, the cruise departs from and returns to Takeshiba Terminal near central Tokyo, but takes place on a much larger ship than most others on the water. You also won’t be stuck out there for too long, as the cruise only lasts a couple of hours, making it a perfect way to kick off a long night on the town. You can spend some time on the top deck admiring the cityscape at night, drink to your heart’s content, and then head back into the city for more!

To make the best of it, you’ll need to make reservations online before coming, though sometimes it’s possible to get same day tickets in person (but don’t count on it!). For couples on date night or for groups, it’s also possible to get party plans that include meal sets and private tables. These cost around 4~5,000 yen, but it’s not necessary to get meal plans to eat on the ship. With just a normal ticket you can still make your way around the different areas buying food a la cart from different vendors, which is probably a better way to experience the ship anyway. Regardless of how you want to spend your time on the water, the drinks are all free during the journey so it’s a pretty good summertime deal.

Once your pick up your tickets you can board the ship from 6:45pm before the 7:15 departure. The boat makes its way through the bay, giving views of Odaiba, Tokyo Tower, Haneda Airport, and even passing under Rainbow Bridge before heading back. All the while you’ll have some dancing and singing performances, as well as DJs in different areas, and of course lots of people mingling in their summer yukata.

While being out on the water in this atmosphere is a nice way to spend a summer night, two hours is also the perfect amount of time to do it in. Just be sure to wear your yukata if you can, as you’ll not only get to look the part, but you’ll also get another 1,000 yen off of your ticket fee!
