If you’re reading this, you’re hungry. Perhaps it’s Sunday morning, you’ve slept through breakfast but aren’t ready for lunch, and a meal at home just won’t do. Celebrate making it through another week by treating yourself to one of Tokyo’s long list of spectacular brunch options.

    Classic Eggs

Fried, scrambled, poached, or boiled, eggs are a brunch classic. Australian-favorite Bills (multiple locations, including Omotesando) rounds out a menu of classics, like the “Full Aussie Breakfast”, with imaginative plates of soft shell crab, zesty kimchi fried rice, chorizo sausage, and—of course—freshly scrambled eggs. If you can’t get a seat, head south to Tractor in Nakameguro for a rustic Benedict doused in hollandaise on a crusty cut of toasted bread.

If Shinjuku is your neck of the woods, head to Sarabeth’s in Shinjuku’s LUMINE 2 building (or its other locations in Marunouchi and Shinagawa) for a melty eggs Benedict from the kitchen of American celebrity chef Sarabeth Levine. Eggs ’n Things hails from Hawaii but you can try it in Harajuku; choose from one of their famous omelettes (like Portuguese sausage and cheese) or build your own. In Meguro, Latte Graphic dishes out a simple but impeccable eggs and toast served with freshly cut tomatoes.

Waffles, Pancakes, and Toast… Oh, my!

If it’s something sweet you’re after, check out Minami Aoyama’s Clinton Street Baking Company for their brioche French toast or warm maple butter pancakes. In Omotesando, Intersect by Lexus brings the attention-to-detail mindset used in designing luxury cars to a simple yet delicious toast set that includes yogurt with garlic and apple sauce. Breizh Café Crêperie serves French-style crepes and galettes filled with sweets like strawberries or savories like duck and shallot. Alternatively, whisk yourself away to France via Buvette, a french-style bistro serving succulent waffles and croque monsieurs on the main floor of the recently opened Tokyo Midtown Hibiya.

If you like your breakfast to impress visually, feast your eyes on Mimosa’s literal towers of pancakes in Asakusa or go to Setagaya’s Flipper’s, who dish out huge fluffy hotcakes covered with mixed berries, caramelized banana, and decadent butter cream. Over in Setagaya, Cafe Alliya dutifully competes for “tallest breakfast in Tokyo,” with super thick portions of eggy French toast.

    International Escapes

Globe-trotters can see the world over brunch at the much-loved World Breakfast All Day in either Harajuku or Gaienmae, with a standard menu of carefully researched international plates like Swiss muesli and a true full English complete with baked beans, all priced between 1000 and 1500 yen. There’s even a rotating list of additional imports, like Lithuanian potato pancakes and chilled borscht.

In Omotesando, Café Kaila Shibuya serves up a Hawaiian breakfast of pancakes slathered in tropical fruit or the always satisfying loco moco, and Bills dishes out a haute Australian brunch on the 7th floor of Tokyu Plaza. Jiyugoaoka Bakeshop in—you guessed it—Jiyugaoka makes a tasty huevos rancheros served on thin tortillas. If you’d rather keep it simple, grab a quick but delicious New York brekkie at Maruichi Bagel in Minato, whose fresh and chewy bagels get topped with your choice of homemade cream cheese.

    Hidden in Hotels

If you’re just visiting the city and aren’t ready to venture from your hotel, you may be in luck: many of Tokyo’s lodgings boast spectacular (and occasionally spectacularly expensive) brunch spots. The Peninsula Tokyo’s Peter serves a lush Sunday brunch with a 24th-floor view and includes all-you-can-drink champagne if you can foot the bill. Over at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi, you’ve got not one but two options: the French Kitchen sets out a three-course buffet (also with an all-you-can-drink option), while the Oak Door hosts a four-course champagne brunch, which includes a high-brow Wagyu beef tenderloin.

Back down at street level, Hotel Koé in Shibuya opens its Koé Lobby both to staying and walk-in guests, dazzling with well-rounded breakfast sets and a beautiful open space that lets customers connect with Shibuya’s urban vibe while savouring the freshness of the food.

    Veggie, Vegan, and Gluten-free

Thanks to an influx of international visitors, Tokyo is quickly expanding its menus to accommodate a wide variety of diets. Harajuku’s Littlebird uses alternative flours to dish out its celiac-friendly take on chocolate banana waffles, fried chicken, and avocado pizza. Meunota in Koenji swaps meat for bean- and grain-based creations, while Mr. Farmer in Omotesando and Mauka Kitchen at Akasaka Intercity cater to both omnivores and their plant-based buddies with enormous vegan green salads brimming with fresh veggies and perfect for a detoxing brunch after a long night out in Tokyo.

For something a little lighter, the Green Smoothie Bar on Harajuku’s Meiji-dori blends up three varieties of smoothies: detox, greens, or tropical. If you fancy dessert for brunch, head to one of Donut Plant’s multiple locations for a rotating menu of donuts that occasionally includes vegan varieties (call or check their website to confirm availability).
