The Beaches of Amami Oshima

Amami Oshima Island and the ocean go naturally hand-in-hand. Being the big island, as the name implies, a trip to this beautiful place is without a doubt a trip where you will take pleasure in the pristine and varied beaches spread out around the island. To save you time, we list below the top beaches in Amami and a few details to get the best of these.

Before we go ahead and talk about the most popular beach in Amami Oshima, we’ll recommend the sea pool at the Ayamaru Misaki Kanko Park. Although you won’t read much about this “beach”, we definitely think is one of the best spots on the island to go for a dip in the ocean. This pristine white sand natural pool will make you forget you are swimming at the edge of the massive Pacific Ocean, and it will be the perfect setting for the whole family to enjoy the day in the water. Being a seaside park, there’s ample parking, toilets, and a large playground for kids to have fun out of the water, too.

    Tomori Beach

Ok, so Tomori Beach is Amami Oshima’s iconic beach and with good reason. It has a large strip of white sand beach, beautiful clear blue water, and rocks and coral that make it a perfect location for swimming and snorkeling. During low tide, the water level retreats significantly, giving way to interesting rock formations and small pools of water which are cool to explore on foot. And, as you walk along the beach, you won’t have to look too hard to catch one of the many hermit crabs or “yadokari” roaming around.

    Kurasaki Beach

For those looking to dive deeper into Amami’s waters, Kurasaki Beach is the place to head to. Of course, this beach is perfect for swimming too, but it is particularly known as one of the islands best diving spots. If diving is a bit too technical for you, then grab a set of snorkel and fins and enjoy the sealife from above. Keep in mind that there are no public facilities on this beach, so bring some snacks and plenty of water both for drinking and for cleaning up once you’ve had enough of the beach.

    Akaogi Beach

    Akaogi Beach

Akaogi Beach is the go-to beach for those looking to do some relaxing paddle boarding, almost as if you were cruising on a lake. The calm waters at Akaogi Beach are actually part of the Sea of Japan and the beach is located in a cove that doesn’t get the rough waters of the Pacific Ocean. Just like at Kurasaki Beach, there are no public facilities here: although this is not reason enough to stay away and we recommend a stop here.

A short drive south from Akaogi Beach but, this time, on the Pacific Coast of Amami Oshima is Yoan Beach. If you’ve travel to Amami for surfing, this is the place to be. Yoan Beach is a long strip of white sand beach, dotted with several beach houses and cafes that offer board rental and surf lessons, along with the islands’ surf vibe. Surfing conditions must be right for surfers to hit the waters, which are full of coral reefs. At low tide, surfing here is not recommended and, at those time, you are better off swimming or taking it easy on a SUP.

Kuninao Beach is also located on the Sea of Japan coast of Amami Oshima: although, as opposed to Akaogi Beach, this quite the drive west of Amami City and harder to reach without a car. Nonetheless, we highly recommend this quite beach and the whole town of of Yamato, if you want to enjoy the beach while getting a taste of the local way of life on the island. During the summer, local residents gather on the beach to take part in a variety of intimate summer festivals. This is also the place to get a glimpse of the loggerhead turtles as they stop on the island to lay their eggs.

To round up the beach list and finish the day in Amami Oshima Island with the perfect sunset, we suggest you head to Amami Ohama Seaside Park. The water here is a little rougher compared to other locations along the Sea of Japan coast, but it is still calm enough to go for a snorkel or a swim. There are plenty of public facilities here and even a camping area with is nestled by natural greenery and hosts an awesome view of the sunset.
