Yakushima is a small, mountainous island in the far south of Japan, part of the Osumi island chain around 60km off the coast of Kyushu. The island is famed for its primeval evergreen forests which are home to some of the oldest trees on earth, the yakusugi (Yakushima cedar). Many of the largest trees were cut down for logging in the past, but a few huge, ancient trees remain standing and have become national treasures, with vast tracts of Yakushima’s forests now afforded protection as a UNESCO world heritage site.
