Yakushima is a small, mountainous island lying 60km south of Kyushu at the southern end of Japan. The island is best-known for its primeval, subtropical evergreen forests that are home to the yakusugi, ancient Yakushima cedar trees which are some of the oldest trees in the country, and possibly on earth – some of the surviving great cedars are thought to be between 2,000 and 7,000 years old. Large swaths of Yakushima’s forests are protected as part of a UNESCO world heritage site.
