While most famous as the home of Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture is blessed with a scenic coastline overlooking a series of bays which form the shape of a heart along the southern coast of Honshu. Peppered with rural islands, lashings of greenery, and a good dose of local seaside charm the Aichi coastline offers a day or two of fresh sea air and quiet sightseeing away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Chita Bay and Mikawa Bay are home to several islands which are dotted between the Hazu and Irago capes. Although the islands are all smallーranging from miniscule, uninhabited stretches of land to 11 kilometersーthey offer the chance to get a taste of Japan’s relatively untouched nature. The largest of Aichi’s islands, Sakushima, attracts the most visitors for its name as one of Japan’s art islands. Although it is no competition for the better-known Naoshima island, the unusual art installations found around Sakushima make for an interesting day out. The island’s 11 kilometers of coastal road are well-suited to keen cyclists or hikers with unlimited picturesque views over the Pacific and swimming opportunities and beach stops aplenty.

The smaller of Aichi Prefecture’s islands include Takeshima, which is within walking distance of mainland Japan via the 387-meter-long Takeshima Bridge. Although the island remains relatively untouched, this far-stretching bridge has become an iconic symbol of Gamagori City and attracts hordes of superstitious couples who believe that crossing the bridge hand-in-hand will bring good luck to their marriage. Superstitions aside, the island is good for a stroll on a sunny day with its mini sand beaches, Yaotomi Shrine, and the abundance of flora and fauna, namely migrating black headed gulls from Siberia and dense bamboo forests which earned the island its name Takeshima, which translates as “Bamboo Island”.

Along Chita Bay sits Nishio City which is home to the Sakana Mura seafood market. This spot receives fresh catches every morning where you can enjoy the lively atmosphere between 5am and 8am. It goes without saying that the nearby restaurants take advantage of the fresh seafood with an abundance of delicious places to stop for lunch or dinner around Nishio. No matter the season, the coast is the place to head for sunset. The beach at Ebisu Cape has arena-style steps all the way around it making it the perfect spot for enjoying a picnic and drinks with full view of the setting sun.

The Atsumi Peninsula which juts out into the Pacific in the southeast of Aichi Prefecture is home to Cape Irago which holds the annual Nanohana Matsuri. Stretching across three months from the beginning of January to the end of March, rapeseed covers the fields in fantastic swarms of yellow. Unlike many flowers around the country, the abundance of rapeseed means that visitors are invited to pick them for a small fee.
