Where to Go in Wakaura

Furobashi Bridge

This stone arch bridge has persisted since 1851 during the Edo period. These historical arch bridges are rare outside of Kyushu. Although the stone has seen many years, you feel safe crossing this bridge as if you were overcoming any and all obstacles in your life.

With that in mind, this spot was a great place for a moment of reflection. We felt as if we walked in the footsteps of Edo period locals. You don’t want to miss crossing this bridge during your time in Wakaura.

Takozushiyama

The best views are always from the top. And at 136 meters, Takozushiyama provides a perfect spot to get a comprehensive 360 degree view of Wakaura Bay. While taking in the sparkling ocean, you can spot some small islands in the distance, boats coming and going, as well as beautiful sunrises and sunsets. You’ll get lost in the deep blues of the ocean letting time slide off your back like some ancient duck emerging from a pristine lake.

Takozushiyama

During the cherry blossom season, this observation spot is known as a great place to take in the beautiful, transient flowers. But do not fret if you aren’t in town during that time. We went there just as the cherry blossoms were starting to come in and we melted in appreciation.

Shiogama Wakayama

Whether you are praying or taking a stroll, Shiogama Shrine provides a refreshing feeling. Secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city, this stone surrounded shrine allows you to reflect in peace.

Wakaura Tenmangu Shrine

Tengu Shrine hosts the gods that protect and oversee Wakaura Bay. This one is part of a three tenmangu shrines all around Japan. Although the stairs to the top are quite steep, there is a gentler detour nearby. In the Edo Period, this location was an important political epicenter for the local area.

Porta Europa

If you feel overdosed with traditional Japanese architecture and philosophy, jump over to Porta Europa. Their theme park is a detailed replica of ancient Europe. Complete with rollercoasters, merry-go-rounds and a ferris wheel, you’ll feel great relief after all the heavy history and nature in Wakaura. While it’s always good to go inside, sometimes you have to let go of some stress with the fast speeds and sharp turns only a theme park can provide.
