Chiyo no Yu

This is one of the smaller free bathhouses in the area and it’s located right next to Yubatake in the center of town. Each bath can hold a few people, but many visitors have said that there are times when no one is here, which is great if you want a private bath. The water at Chiyo no Yu is also a bit cooler than some of the other locations, so it’s ideal for people who can’t handle the heat of some of the hotter onsen. Chiyo no Yu is open from 9am until 5pm.

Goza no Yu

Goza no Yu actually houses two separate onsen facilities with different hot spring sources. The baths here are quite large and the wooden rooms are lit by natural sunlight and warm ambient lighting. Goza no Yu also has yukata rentals for 2,500 yen for three hours if you want to get some good photos or just walk around town in traditional clothes for a few hours. Goza no Yu is open from 7am to 9pm and costs 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children.

Netsu no Yu

You can’t actually bathe at Netsu no Yu, since the water is anywhere from 51-94° celsius. Instead, they have a dance exhibition and water stirring ceremony. There are six performances that you can watch, and between 11:30am and 2pm, you can even have a chance at being part of the stirring ceremony. The entrance fee is 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. Performances can be seen in the morning at 9:30, 10, and 10:30am. Afternoon performances take place at 3:30, 4, and 4:30pm.

Otaki no Yu

Otaki no Yu has several baths with different temperatures, so it’s a great place for groups with different temperature preferences. This onsen is probably the most popular one in the area. It has indoor and outdoor areas for men and women. Otaki no Yu is open from 9am to 9pm and the entrance fee is 900 yen for adults and 400 yen for children.

Shirohata no Yu

Located in the center of town, this onsen neighbors Netsu no Yu and is one of the hotter baths in the area. At 45° C, this onsen is not for the faint of heart. On the upside, admission to this onsen is free and it has some of the longest hours of any onsen in the area. You can visit Shirohata no Yu from 5am-11pm.

While thefts are rare in Japan, some bathhouses may not have lockers so be sure to leave valuables behind in your room just to be safe. Most onsen houses in Japan won’t allow you to enter if you have visible tattoos, due to their association with organized crime in Japan. If you do have tattoos, it would be advisable to cover them if you can.
