Mt. Moiwa Ropeway
Mt. Moiwa Ropeway
Standing at 531 meters tall, Mt. Moiwa is the perfect place to get a view of Sapporo, and getting there is half the fun. From Susukino, you can take a streetcar for 170 yen to get to the Ropeway Iriguchi Station, then hop on the Mt. Moiwa Ropeway to get most of the way up the mountain, with a second mini cable car taking you all the way to the top of the mountain. Round-trip tickets for both the ropeway and cable car are 1,700 yen per person, but it’s well worth the experience and view at the top.

Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Shrine
Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Shrine
For a serene stroll through nature, head over to Maruyama Park. During cherry blossom season in spring, the park is lined with the pink and white flowers of sakura trees. In the winter, the snow transforms the park into a winter wonderland. Inside the park is the Hokkaido Shrine, a Shinto shrine that followers believe hold four spirits, including the soul of Emperor Meiji. The shrine was originally constructed in 1870 and features beautiful, Meiji-era Japanese architecture. You can also take a 30-minute hike up Mt. Maruyama or visit the Maruyama Zoo while you’re in the area.

Historic Buildings
Historic Buildings
Sapporo’s history began to flourish during the Meiji Period. This time also saw the construction of many shrines and buildings that still stand today. Be sure to visit the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, built in 1888, early in the morning to get the best pictures and avoid the crowds. The Hoheikan building was originally built as a hotel for people involved with the development of the prefecture; even Emperor Meiji himself was a guest. During World War II, it was used by the Japanese military before being seized by the American military. This beautiful western-style building has a rich history and is well worth your time.

Sapporo TV Tower
Sapporo TV Tower
Enjoy a relaxing walk in Odori Park, the “Central Park” of Sapporo, and visit the Sapporo TV Tower. The Sapporo TV Tower stands at more than 90 meters tall, giving you a great view of the park and city for a decent price. At the top of the tower, there are coin-operated binoculars to give you an even better view of the city below and the mountains in the distance. There’s also a gift shop, a restaurant, and plenty of things to do in the area. Make sure to pick up one of the commemorative coins and pay homage to the tower’s mascot at the “TV Dad” Shrine.

Nijokani Market
Nijokani Market
If you find you’ve woken up with a big appetite, head over to the Nijokani Market. This market sells fresh seafood every day from around 7 am till about 6 pm. You can grab one of the local favorites, uni ikura donburi (sea urchin and fish roe over rice), for a quick breakfast. The market is the place where many chefs come to collect their ingredients for the day and so the morning is the most exciting time to visit. At night, the area is bustling with people going to local restaurants for drinks and sushi.
