Stretching an impressive 196 kms, the Shimanto River is the largest river in the Shikoku region. Beginning at Mt. Irazu and flowing out to the Pacific Ocean, this huge river winds between valleys and through the nearby towns of Nakatosa and Shimanto. Because it features almost no dams and very few river embankments along the way, it's the untouched atmosphere of the river that makes it so alluring. It’s estimated that around 200 species of wildlife live in and along the Shimanto River, including ayu (sweetfish), freshwater shrimp, and eel.

There are a number of ways to explore the river including by canoe, raft or on foot, however there’s really no better way to relax and truly soak up the impressive natural beauty than by taking a Shimanto River sightseeing yakatabune boat cruise, known as Houseboat Shimanto no Ao. Today there are four businesses that operate yakata boats along the middle and lower basins of the Shimanto River each offering slightly different courses both regular and seasonal.

Operating hourly is the more standard type river course, this option is great for those who don’t want to lock themselves down with booking commitments, as you can grab a ride without a reservation. Throughout the year the boats also offer special seasonal courses including a summer trip which allows guests to swim in the river. There’s also the once daily firefly course that runs from the end of May until early June, here in the evenings you can watch the fireflies dance as you take your evening cruise along the water. During the colder months ask about the winter course, which gives visitors a unique look at the snow-dusted surrounds from the comfort of a snuggly heated houseboat.

Food is also available on your trip, with the area’s local cooks whipping up plates of fresh and delicious eel and ayu fished straight from the river’s clear water, which is baked in charcoal on board the boat. There are a number of other meal options available, like bento boxed lunches and other more extravagant offerings. You can place your meal order when you book your visit.
