    Matsue English Garden

Interested in the first authentic public English garden in Japan? Keith Gott brought his passion and experience for gardens to Matsue back in 2001 from England. Since then his work has attracted thousands of visitors drawn to the variety of plants and elegant design.

Many have stated their surprise at the beauty of the layout and wide space. It’s no wonder that some host their weddings here! Both spacious and peaceful enough to bring energetic children and to have a think. With a plethora of shops inside boasting handmade souvenirs, takoyaki or even small, intimate training sessions, a trip to this garden is worth your time. Especially considering that entrance is free!

Even old financial institutions can turn to art. The Karakoro Art Studio is constructed from the Matsue branch of an old Japanese bank. Inside, one can find a range of restaurants and craft shops with earrings, necklaces, and other accessories. Add to that the craft experiences where you can make Japanese treats or Wagashi; an activity perfect for children. As it gets busy, we recommend making a reservation beforehand. Whether it’s an experience or a souvenir, you’ll surely go home with a memory of this old-time building turned creative hub.

Fancy a romantic sunset amongst historical relics? The Shimane Art museum has what you need. The architect of the building, Kiyonori Kikutake, was the former President of the Japan Institute of Architects and also happened to build the Tanabe Museum listed below. It’s no wonder his work is renowned, as the lobby is perfectly designed to soak in the famous sunset over Japan’s seventh largest lake, Lake Shinji. Inside, you can enjoy exhibitions highlighting ukiyo-e prints and selected Western pieces. Despite the crowds that are drawn here year-round, the space remains quiet.
