Nightlife in Matsue City

Matsue is most famous for its historic castle but there is plenty more to explore in this beautiful lakeside city. Its nightlife, although quieter than in other prefectural capitals around Japan, is still appealing for those spending more than one night in town. Here are some of our recommendations to get the best out Matsue’s night scene.

Matsue City is divided in two by the Ohashi River and so is its nightlife. On the south side, starting from Matsue Station and moving north towards the river, nightcrawlers can make their way through Asahimachi, Teramachi, and the Isemiyacho districts. Along the way you can hop in and out of an eclectic selection of bars and restaurants. Closest to Matsue JR Station in Asahimachi, Hotel Knut Cafe and Bar welcomes visitors with its giant tree trunk, high ceilings, and refreshing bar food and drinks. This is a good starting point to explore the city after dark.

  • Kaya

A block west from Hotel Knut and in the Teramachi district, you’ll find Kaya, unofficially Matsue’s only reggae bar. Inside this colourful hangout, as should be expected from any respectful reggae bar, music is not the only treat - one can enjoy Jamaican food classics like jerk chicken, meat pies, a bottle of Red Stripe beer, or some good old rum while the large selection of reggae records play till the early morning hours. On occasion, live bands take over adding even more spice to the night.

  • Rerere

Also in Teramachi and around the corner from Kaya, those who appreciate the small bars common in the yokocho districts found around Japan’s bigger cities can head to Rerere. From the outside, this bar seems like a hole in the wall, but once inside, the bilingual and sociable bartender keeps things very interesting and entertaining. Rerere is perfect for those who want to connect with the locals while enjoying a chilled pint of beer, local sake, good conversation, and a cozy vibe.

  • Oideyasu Okiniya Izakaya

Over to the north side of the Ohashi River and onto the Kyomise district is Oideyasu Okiniya, one of the best Izakayas in the city. Join many of the locals who make this their regular dining and drinking spot; you’ll get to enjoy the “omakase” sashimi platter, the recommended maitake mushroom tempura, and delicious Shimane sake that come either chilled or hot depending on the season you visit Matsue. Check with the chef about the daily specials which vary with the seasons.

Before calling it a night in Matsue, a must-visit hangout along the Ohashi River is Bar EAD. This cool riverside hangout offers a comfy space where to enjoy a good drink while taking in the view of the city at sunset decorated with the city light. During the warm nights, the rooftop is open and from time to time, and live bands keep the crowd going until well into the night.
