Catching a bus around town is the most simple way to move from one attraction to the next. The colourful Lake Line Bus is a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus that costs 200 yen for one journey or 500 yen for a full day of unlimited rides. For unrestricted travel in both Matsue and the neighbouring Izumo areas, the Enmusubi Perfect Ticket promises three days of bus and train rides for just 3,000 yen. This includes the Lake Line bus, city buses, and buses to and from the airports.

While walking all of the city’s attractions in one day could prove challenging there are certain areas that are best discovered at a leisurely pace by foot. The cobbled streets of the Kyomise District are easily navigated for a day of shopping and a stroll along the quaint Kyobashi-gawa River. Matsue Castle can also be visited by foot; a 30-minute walk from Matsue Station, walking north to the castle is a good way to get a feel for the city on arrival as you pass by Lake Shinji as well as a number of the city’s charming canals, shops, and cafes.

Hiring a bike in Matsue City is one simple and active option for a day of sightseeing. However, for a day away from the tourist attractions, jump on your bike and make a beeline for the Shinjiko-Kohoku Cycling Road. This 23-kilometre route starts at Matsue Station and follows the northern side of Lake Shinji all the way west until Izumo Taisha Shrine in Izumo City. Along the way you’ll pass several bridges and parks including Matsue English Garden and Matsue Vogel Park.

Otherwise known as the City of Water, it goes without saying that Matsue has a number of options for those wanting to explore the city in style from a boat along one of the many canals. The Horikawa Pleasure Boat offers a 50-minute tour around the city’s canals for 1,230 yen which includes a retelling of the history of Matsue by the friendly, local boatman.
