Where to Eat in Miyama

Morishige

Morishige is arguably one of the area’s most famous little culinary hubs. Located on the main road that connects the busy heart of Kyoto City with the more laid-back village of Miyama it’s a well-trodden establishment for locals and visitors alike. The restaurant building itself is one of the many iconic thatched roof houses that populate the area. Still standing tall after a long 140 years, the only thing more impressive than this building is the food it houses. The interior is more spacious than you’d expect but somehow it manages to feel cozy in winter and refreshingly cool throughout the winter.

All the dishes created here are made using only the finest local produce from around the area. The Morishige owners grow all the rice and vegetables used in the restaurant themselves and the catch the trout they serve up, putting special care into the farm to plate method of food sourcing. Situated in the middle of the restaurant is a large open hearth where the chef grills the trout over a roaring wood fire for around an hour prior to serving. If you want to try this famous dish a day reservation is required. The popular restaurant also serves the best trout sashimi you’ll ever taste. For those who aren’t so into fish it’s worth trying the soba buckwheat noodles served with grated Japanese yam and or one of the delicious rice bowls that are also menu staples.

Cafe Milan

For a little taste of Italy right here in Miyama you can’t go past Milan café, home to the popular Miyama milk gelato. This cozy café serves delicious sweets and coffee, making it the perfect place to pop by for a little mid-morning or afternoon pick me up while travelling through the area.

Also sticking to the self sufficient method of food production, like Morishige restaurant, the owners at Cafe Milan have a small farming space. Here they raise their own chickens and source all the eggs they use for their popular gelato and mouthwatering creamy puddings. Other local Milan recommendations include menu staples the chiffon cake and Miyama smoothies. The café is open from 10am until 5pm every day except Wednesday.

Café Satoyamasha

Café hopping in Miyama is arguably one great way to explore the area, and there’s one last place you have to add to your list, Café Satoyamasha. Overlooking the scenic mountain landscape, this welcoming café offers some of the best lunchtime dining in the town. The chefs here use only the best local produce to craft rustic homemade style dishes that are as warm and friendly as the café itself. Try the popular venison soboro bowl set for 1,300 yen or grab a Pita bread sandwich set for just 1,200 yen. To finish off your visit don’t forget to grab a famous fluffy black bean pudding.
