The Parks of Sendai
  • During the Meiji period Sendai became known colloquially as ‘The City of Trees’ (Mori no Miyako) because of the broad variety of trees that populate the city’s grounds. From parks filled with stunning pink cherry blossoms to the impressive Japanese Zelkova trees that tower through the city center, the area really lives up to its name. The best way to really enjoy the natural beauty of the area is to go park hopping, and there’s no better place to start than the delicate Izumi Botanical Garden located about 40 minutes from the heart of Sendai.

A key park to visit during your travels through Sendai is the The Tohoku University Botanical Garden, one of only three national university botanical gardens located in Japan. Situated on Aoba mountain, the park was originally founded in 1958 for the purposes of education and further study of the flora and fauna growing in the Tohoku region. Thanks to its preservation over the past 400 years, the untouched nature of the park makes priceless in terms of academic value. The pristine primeval forest of mount Aobayama stretches over a massive 520,000 square meters and offers endless opportunities for walking and nature exploration. To get there from Sendai Station take the five minute Tozai subway ride to Kokusai Center Station, which costs 200 yen. From there the park is an easy 10 minute walk.

A little further out of the city center sits Dainohara Forest Park a little more of a secret than some of the area’s other parks, it’s a fantastic place to visit all year round as the park fully transforms with each of Sendai’s four distinct seasons. The park is actually very close to the Sendai Science Museum, so if you’re planning to visit the museum, a visit to the park is a great way to spend the reminder of the day. Big enough for an afternoon stroll, the Japanese style garden is a picnic and napping hotspot for many locals and visitors. To get there from Sendai station catch the Sendai City Subway to Asahigaoka Station the trip takes about 10 minutes and costs 250 yen.

Located in the heart of downtown Sendai sits Jozenji Dori, an embodiment of the essence of Sendai, the city of trees. Cutting through the city’s center the street is lined with stunning Japanese Zelkova trees that change along with the city’s seasons. Dotted in-between the passageway of trees is a collection of sculptures including Emilio Greco's Memories of Summer by artist Venanzo Crocetti. The sculptures give the area a unique open-air gallery feel. If you have time to spare, a stroll through the street broken up by visits to the local stores around the area is a great way to explore the heart and soul of Sendai.

The oldest park in Sendai is Nishi Park. Established during the In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the park was officially opened in 1875 as a tribute to the area’s breathtakingly beautiful sakura cherry blossoms. It’s well known as one of the best cherry blossom spots in all of Sendai and during spring the area is swarmed by locals and visitors wanting to immerse themselves in the pale pink blossoms that bloom throughout the area. There are a number of little sightseeing spots within the park grounds including an impressive Kokeshi doll statue, and a plum tree, which was brought back from Korea 400 years ago by the lord Date Masamune himself.
