A 30-minute walk from the delightful Tsumago post town or just a five-minute walk from Nagiso Station, Shimomura is a traditional guest house in a rural paradise tucked away in the Kiso Mountains. With nine rooms spaced over two storeys, the friendly owners welcome in guests to a homely atmosphere where you can embrace rural life with no wi-fi and views out over the surrounding fields and mountains from every room. As well as having an interesting history of its own, Fujiwara House just a short walk away boasts a 300-year history as one of the oldest farmer’s houses in the region.

This unassuming guest house makes good use of the Kiso Valley’s abundant resources to provide guests with an unforgettable visit. The simple wooden bathtub is made from cypress wood from the area while the meals on offer are bursting with local, seasonal ingredients from Nagano Prefecture. Prices range depending on whether you choose to add breakfast and dinner to your deal, with a simple plan setting you back 6,000 yen per person with an extra 500 yen for breakfast, 1,000 yen for dinner, or an additional 1,500 yen if you opt for breakfast and dinner. With few other eating options in the area, the fair price is well worth the delicious and varied Japanese menu of seafood-rich dishes with vegetarian options also available.

For a more convenient and conventional stay, Kiso Mikawaya is a well-kept and spacious ryokan that is one of the most affordable of the guest houses in central Kiso Fukushima. The simple, traditional guest rooms are homely but with the added modern conveniences of wi-fi, a sophisticated dining area, and a manga corner. Quiet evenings in the Kiso Valley are best spent soaking in Kiso Mikawaya’s in-house onsen which uses natural hot carbonated spring water from the area.

The guest house’s menu is undoubtedly its strength with beautiful Japanese meals served up to guests every evening. Evening meals are a colourful spread of local ingredients in many different forms including the iconic miso soup, pickles, tofu, fish dishes, and meat dishes. Guest rooms vary in prices depending on the number of guests per room but an individual Western room starts at 3,980 yen if you choose not to dine at the ryokan while the Japanese style rooms including meals range from around 5,000 yen to 9,000 yen per person.
