Surfing in Miyazaki
The coastal city of Miyazaki on the island of Kyushu is home to arguably the best place to catch those sweet waves. The almost year-round consistency in typhoon swell contributes to the rising popularity of Miyazaki as a surfer’s haven. Kisakihama Beach; a big, open beach break north of Miyazaki City which gets flat only a few weeks a year has become one of the more frequently visited locations.

Miyazaki has previously held a position on international surf competition circuits due to its diverse assortment of punchy reefs, refined points, river mouths, and beach breaks. What gives it an elevated status of attraction is the backdrop on which it is painted. Jaw-dropping mountainous terrain against the slowly setting sun on the Pacific Ocean leaves even the most experienced of surfers and sightseers stunned. On weekends and holidays, you may often see a crowd, however, in comparison to some of the world’s more popular surf spots, Miyazaki and Kisakihama Beach aren’t especially overcrowded.

If you’re looking to ditch those wetsuits and dive into some warm water, then August to November would be prime visiting time. During this period, frequent typhoons swirl in the Pacific to the East and South of Kyushu Island, leaving Miyazaki a wonderful world of warm waves. In this peak season, there is some serious swell, often shoulder high to triple overhead. The Japanese winter runs through December until March, and while it’s still great for surfing, it can get relatively cold.

If you didn’t happen to bring your board with you on your trip to Japan, you can rent one at Misaki on Aoshima beach. They not only rent out a variety of boards but they are also the only guest house in the area, with very reasonable rates. As a plus they also run a restaurant and bar offering their very own hand-roasted coffee, pizzas and more.
