Miyazaki Shrine

For locals of Miyazaki city, their main shrine is intrinsic to their spirituality and way of life. The shrine complex, which is said to have been established over 2500 years ago is the center of religious worship for many residents. It is dedicated to the first emperor of Japan, the mythical Emperor Jimmu and his deified parents, Tamayori-hime and Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto. The shrine has had many different names, layouts, and rulers throughout history and officially became recognized as a Kanpei-taisha or high-ranked imperial shrine in 1885.

As the central shrine in Miyazaki, it is famous for its colorful festivals and celebrations. The Miyazaki Grand Shrine Festival is held during October with costume parades, markets, and plays. The parade begins at the shrine and makes its way to downtown Miyazaki with processions called Shinko and Shinshin. Meaning the passing train of people appear like scenes from historical picture scrolls. Following the traditional re-enactments are the Shanshan horses, covered in bells and ridden by women in stunning wedding kimono.

Miyazaki shrine also hosts a yabusame or horse archery festival amid the cherry blossom trees in mid-April. The traditions and technique of yabusame have been kept alive since Japan’s feudal era and provides visitors with a visual connection to the past. Dressed in authentic Kamakura bushido costumes, samurai compete against each other to hit targets while riding.

The entrance to the shrine, flanked by traditional toro lamps, can be found hidden among the trees. To get to the main shrine, visitors must pass under a huge, cedar torii gate which marks the beginning of their spiritual journey. Past the torii gate are winding pathways that lead deeper into the shrine’s complex.

The pathways are fringed on either side by forest which creates a peaceful atmosphere that allows travelers to reflect and meditate. The shrine’s buildings, including its main shrine, are all constructed of unpainted cedar wood which gives the shrine a sense of elegance and simplicity.

The shrine is central to the city and can be accessed by either train or bus. The nearest train station being Miyazaki Jingu station which can be reached by a 3 minute ride from Miyazaki station costing 160 yen, from there it’s a 5 to 10 minute walk to the shrine’s entrance. Alternatively, there is a 10 minute bus ride from Miyazaki station straight to the entrance of the shrine costing 210 yen. Admission is free and there are no closing times for the shrine grounds.
