Aoshima Island, Miyazaki Overview
  • The small 1.5 km long island of Aoshima sits just off the coast of the city of Miyazaki, but is connected by a landbridge. The island is home to the majestic Aoshima Shrine which is said to bring good fortune to married couples. The beautiful island of white beaches and subtropical jungle is a popular tourist destination, bringing in over 70 million tourists every year.

There are over 200 species of plants to be discovered on this island and it is famous as one of the northernmost areas for subtropical plants in the Northern Hemisphere. It is specified as a special natural monument of the country.

Aoshima Island makes for a peaceful afternoon walk, leisurely venture over the bridge located at the bottom of the island to arrive at a small market and rainforest gardens. For all lovers of creatures, the mini tide pools in the washboard areas are home to many sea slugs, crabs, and small fish. Be sure to take a windbreaker or light jacket with you as the breeze can get a little chilly.

The shallow water around the island has a geographical phenomenon known as Oni no Sentakuita (Devil’s Washboard), or devil’s washboard which can be seen in all its glory at low tide. These almost perfect straight rows of basalt rock are so spectacular that they seem as if they were man-made, but they are indeed natural formations.

As a bonus, there are souvenir shops before you even reach the island selling fruits, hats, and various other trinkets - there’s even an entire store dedicated to one of Japan’s most famous characters, Hello Kitty. You can explore your taste for Japanese food by trying kaki gori (shaved ice) and many other delicious culturally enriching food. Why not buy some delicious treats and have a picnic on the island!

Aoshima Island can be accessed by a local or rapid train on the JR Nichinan Line from Miyazaki Station to Aoshima Station which will take 30 minutes and will cost 370 yen, fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass. The island is then about a five-minute walk from the station. Alternatively, buses from Miyazaki Station stop at Aoshima on their way to Udo Shrine, these depart at a rate of one per hour and will cost you 720 yen. It is important to note that you cannot access the island itself in your car, however there is free parking around the entrance and approach to Aoshima Island for you to use, and is a three-minute walk from the island.
