Edo Wonderland

So you’ve immersed yourself in Nikko’s natural beauty, and spirituality by visiting some of the city’s most sacred shrines and temples, now it’s time to really experience the history with a visit to Nikko Edomura, also known as Edo Wonderland. This historic theme park is a realistic recreation of Japanese town life during the Edo Period (1603-1868). Built with Edo style architecture, and featuring townspeople in traditional period costume, a visit to Edo Wonderland is essentially the closest you’ll be able to get to time travel right now. The setting of Edo Wonderland is actually so realistic that it’s been used as the backdrop for a number of period tv dramas over the years.

There are an abundance of activities and events happening in the wonderland all year round making it a great place for a day or half day trip if you are in the area. If you’re feeling jealous about the townspeople’s attire, don’t be because park guests are offered the opportunity to dress up in Edo Period costumes. The costumes are available to rent while you tour the town's shops and museums, and you can play classic games and witness impressive traditional performances in style.

Beyond traditional recreations of local shops from the Edo Period (like the blacksmith and armor repair shop), Edo Wonderland also features other rather unique attractions. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Haunted Temple, which is filled with Japanese spirits and demons, and lose yourself in the House of Illusion where the walls seem take on a life of their own.

Edo Wonderland

The wonderland is open from 9am until 5pm from March until November and 9:30am until 4pm from December to March. Be sure to get there with plenty of time up your sleeve because there’s a lot to see and do and admission shuts an hour before closing time. It’s open every day of the week apart from Wednesdays, except when a Wednesday falls on a national holiday and during school holidays. It's also shut for a few weeks between December 8th to 21st. Admission is 4700 yen or 4100 yen after 2pm in summer or 1pm in winter. Entry includes access to all shows and attractions.

Edo Wonderland

There are a number of options to get to Edo Wonderland depending on where you’re coming from and what your itinerary looks like for that day. Firstly there’s the option of catching one of the Tobu operated buses that run between Kinugawa Onsen Station and Nikko Edomura (Edo Wonderland). This ride will take around 20 minutes, and will cost 410 yen each way. The buses depart every 20-30 minutes. If you have a Kinugawa Theme park Pass or a Marugoto Nikko Kinugawa Free Pass the trips will be covered by that.

Edo Wonderland

If you’re planning on making your way to the wonderland via some of Nikko’s other famous attractions it’s worth looking into grabbing the free shuttle bus which operates between Edo Wonderland and Fujiya Kanko Center. Located near the well trodden Toshogu Shrine, this shuttle offers around 4-5 round trips per day, depending on peak times. Be wary however that buses only operate on days when Edo Wonderland is open. This trip takes 35 minutes each way, and a few of the buses stop at JR Nikko Station along the way.
