Kussharo Genya Youth Guest House

Kussharo Genya Youth Guesthouse is an YHA approved youth hostel set among the green fields and farmland of Teshikaga, a short distance from the vast and very beautiful Lake Kussharo. The hostel is owned and operated by Mr. Yamamoto, an ex-chef along with his wife and their daughter. The building is made entirely of wood giving it a nice wood-cabin kind of feel, which rather suits the surrounding mountains and sparse countryside plains.

The guesthouse offers both dormitory style sleeping options as well as private rooms at a slightly increased rate, both reasonably priced. There are also gender separated communal baths that are supplied with locally sourced natural hot spring water.

Perhaps the biggest draw to this guesthouse though is the home cooked food that Mr. Yamamoto and his family prepare for guests each morning and evening. Items on the menu change daily, and unfortunately you don't get a choice/chance to pick and choose, so if you’re vegetarian or have strict dietary requirements it may be a good idea to opt for the lower price and organize your own food from local restaurants and convenience stores in the nearby town of Kawayu Onsen (10km).

If however you are happy to eat what the Yamamoto family prepare for you, you will encounter a wide variety of delicious home-cooked meals, mainly made up of Japanese cuisine but with a few Western dishes thrown in for good measure. A typical meal includes locally sourced fish, meat and vegetables. The family take great pride in their cooking and seem to enjoy switching the menu up, keeping guests eagerly awaiting come dinner time. Breakfast is served daily from 7am and dinner from 6:30pm. For guests who are feeling a little peckish outside of these times there is a selection of homemade ramen bowls available until 10:30pm, including shio (salt), shoyu (soy sauce) and miso flavours. There is also a selection of alcoholic drinks, cocktails and soft drinks available in the lounge area until late into the evening.

Aside from cooking up feasts for his guests, Mr Yamamoto is very enthusiastic about photography and the great outdoors. He combines both of these loves in a unique early risers tour that he offers to all guests at the hostel. The tour which happens in his mini bus, costs 1000 yen per person, starts at 4:30am, and goes past Lake Kussharo for some stargazing before heading up to a nearby mountain peak to see sunrise over the surrounding area, before arriving back at the hostel in time for breakfast. If you’re curious about what sort of views you will get to see, be sure to have a flick through his photo albums before making the decision to join the tour.

The guesthouse have rental bicycles available (from April to October) for 1,000 yen per day, making all of the above easy to access if you don't have a car.
