If there’s one thing the Tokachi region in the east of Hokkaido is celebrated for it’s the abundance of beet sugar and delicious dairy products produced in the region. Add in some eggs and the ever popular Japanese sweets ingredient adzuki beans and you’ve got yourself some irresistible sweet treats. With Obihiro home to myriad cake shops it’s worth a trip even if it’s just to pop by for dessert.

Takahashi Manjuya
Takahashi Manjuya
A local favorite is undoubtedly Takahashi Manjuya which has been baking up Japanese style muffins in its downtown Obihiro shop since 1953. Crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the shop’s signature imagawa-yaki muffin comes in a few flavors but the sweet adzuki bean jam is recommended for the typical Japanese sweets flavor in one of its most satisfying forms. At just 120 yen for a muffin, there’s no excuse to miss out on the cheese flavor imagawa-yaki for some seriously yummy comfort food. The shop is open from 9am until 8pm every day apart from Wednesdays.
