If there’s one thing the Tokachi region in the east of Hokkaido is celebrated for it’s the abundance of beet sugar and delicious dairy products produced in the region. Add in some eggs and the ever popular Japanese sweets ingredient adzuki beans and you’ve got yourself some irresistible sweet treats. With Obihiro home to myriad cake shops it’s worth a trip even if it’s just to pop by for dessert.

A cake from the ever popular Rokkatei store is a common gift for anyone bringing back souvenirs from Hokkaido. With the Obihiro branch found right in the center of the city just a five-minute walk from the station, it’s an unmissable stop-off on a walk through the city’s main streets. The shop on the first floor offers a number of sweets from its reputed strawberry chocolates to the popular Marseille butter sandwich while heading up to the second floor brings you to the relaxing tea room where you can match up your cake of choice with a cup of coffee or Japanese tea.

A local favorite is undoubtedly Takahashi Manjuya which has been baking up Japanese style muffins in its downtown Obihiro shop since 1953. Crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the shop’s signature imagawa-yaki muffin comes in a few flavors but the sweet adzuki bean jam is recommended for the typical Japanese sweets flavor in one of its most satisfying forms. At just 120 yen for a muffin, there’s no excuse to miss out on the cheese flavor imagawa-yaki for some seriously yummy comfort food. The shop is open from 9am until 8pm every day apart from Wednesdays.
