Kamakura Yasai (Kamakura’s vegetables) have seen a resurgence in popularity of late, especially in the neighboring cities of Tokyo and Yokohama where many high end restaurants proudly advertise Kamakura’s goods as a marker of premium produce. A large majority of the advertised Kamakura Yasai that you’ll find in the bigger cities originally came from here, the impressive Kamakura vegetable market.
The Kamakura Farmers Market
Thanks to it reputation for being home to some of the freshest, most diverse and best quality Japanese produce in the region, the market has become a rather unintentional tourist destination. Many food lovers, chefs and culinary experts make the trek from Tokyo to Kamakura just to see what’s on offer and explore the food produced by the local farmers.
The Kamakura Farmers Market
The market itself is located very close to Kamakura station, making it an ideal place to stop off when passing through the city. Head south down Wakamiya Oji for just a few minutes until you come to a quaint and rustic warehouse. It may not look like much from the outside, but it’s inside where the magic happens. Here you’ll meet a large variety of famers selling a diverse selection of produce every single day of the week.
The Kamakura Farmers Market
Reportedly starting in 1928, the market runs seven days a week nearly year-round, making it a permanent destination for those planning to visit the city. Because The Kamakura Yasai brand is actually a collective of farmers, each day features different expert farmers displaying and selling their carefully grown crops. The market runs on a roster featuring four different groups who work at the market on a rotating schedule, though it’s not set in stone the schedule for sellers is one appearance at the market roughly every four days.
The Kamakura Farmers Market
In terms of opening hours, everything kicks off at around 8am, this is typically when the local chefs swarm the warehouse grounds in search of the perfect ingredients for that night’s dishes. If you don’t want to do battle with the chefs, head there after 9am, when the market is more tourist friendly and the local farmers have time to chat and give you a little insider’s knowledge into their work. The warehouse stays open generally until dusk or when the vegetable have sold out, so if you’re after something special, don’t leave it too late in the day.
The Kamakura Farmers Market
The coastal climate of Kamakura makes the area an ideal spot for growing a variety of different vegetables and fruits, however like everywhere else in Japan, this city does have its own unique specialties. If you want to try the best the city has to offer you can't go past the sweet butternut pumpkin, or the broad selection of root vegetables like Japanese daikon, the vibrant purple daikon, and of course crisp, sweet juicy Kamakura carrots.
