Karuizawa’s Beautiful Churches

Karuizawa Kogen church

Located just a short five-minute drive from Naka-Karuizawa Station you’ll find the impressively built Karuizawa Kogen church. The striking church is uniquely constructed with a pointed triangular roof which follows a sharp path all the way to the ground on both sides of the church, thus creating an effect which makes the church seem as if it is just the tip of a much bigger structure lying just beneath the surface. Karuizawa Kogen church is surrounded by lush greenery, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Karuizawa, and for good reason. Today it is used as a place of worship, as well as hosting weddings and even small concerts. The lovely Hoshino Hot Springs and Wild Bird Sanctuary are located close by to the church so why not make a day of visiting the area.

Karuizawa Shaw Memorial Church

Karuizawa Shaw memorial church is named after Alexander Croft Shaw, a leading figure in the early years of the Anglican Church in Japan, and known to some as the “Father of Karuizawa”. The church was built in 1895, and now plays home to weddings and other customary ceremonies following the tradition of the Anglican Canterbury Cathedral.

Karuizawa Stone church

Karuizawa’s Stone church truly is a treat for the senses, with the intriguingly unique design providing visitors with a stunning site which seamlessly blends organic nature and man made structure. The church was first constructed in remembrance of the Japanese author and Christian evangelist Uchimura Kanzo, and was designed by American architect Kendrick Kellogg. The great architect designed the church is such a way so as not to disturb the natural surrounds, ensuring the natural airflow and water stream of the site remained uninterrupted, subsequently leading to the sleek breathtaking structure which stands today.

St. Paul’s Catholic Church

The cozy and charmingly rustic St. Paul’s Catholic Church is located just behind Karuizawa’s focal shopping street, thus making it extremely easy to reach no matter the itinerary or time constraints. The quaint wooden church was first constructed in 1935, and was designed by the respected Czech architect Antonin Raymond. The church is actually one of several renowned Japanese buildings designed by Raymond, who had a sharp interest in Japan and Japanese culture. So much so that he is recognized in Japan as the man responsible for introducing modern architecture to the land of the rising sun.
