Nagano City is the capital city of the Nagano prefecture in the Chubu region of Japan. It originally evolved around the temple of Zenko-ji – one of Japan’s most popular temples. In 1998 it hosted the Winter Olympics, and former Olympic facilities and memorabilia can still be enjoyed throughout the town. Today Nagano is a popular tourist spot and is full of fun things to do – here’s our pick of some great places to go in Nagano.

Built during the Sengoku period (1467 – 1590) during a time of massive conflict all across Japan, Matsushiro Castle was constructed under the orders of Shingen Takeda in order to defend an oncoming attack from Kenshin Uesugi. The castle was cleverly built in a way which took advantage of its natural surrounds, creating a robust fortress. It flourished for many years but ultimately fell victim to the sands of time. Today the castle ruins are a fascinating place to visit and get a sense of old Nagano first hand. The castle ruins are also a very popular cherry blossom viewing site.
