1166 Backpackers is small yet very comfortable. The hostel offers the three typical types of rooms found in Japanese guesthouses, mixed dormitory rooms, female-only dormitory rooms, and a private room for those interested in the traditional tatami-style accommodation. If you don’t mind the shared accommodation space, then the dormitory rooms are just perfect and are truly set to give guests a comfortable sleep. In the mixed dorm you’ll be assigned a bunk bed, and if given the chance, you should request the lower level which will also have you sleeping on a tatami mat. As a bonus, the panels that divide the mixed dorm space have Japanese artwork printed on them making your stay even more pleasing.

Back on the first floor, the main feature of 1166 Backpackers is its lounge. Equipped with a kitchen area, communal table, sofas, books, board games, etc. This is the place where guests can start the day with a warm cup of complimentary coffee and a self-cooked meal, or end the day of sightseeing with good conversation, games, and light music. This is where you can connect with other travelers, or simply grab a book and relax on your own. Next to the complimentary drinks, you’ll find a handwritten list of recommended restaurants in case cooking is not part of your travel plans.

One thing that sets this hostel apart from other accommodation options in the area is their connection with the creative locals and their knowledge of less-touristy side of Nagano City. If you take the time to talk with one of the staff, they will gladly provide some off-the-beaten- path recommendations and tips on when to grab the freshest oyaki in town. 1166 Backpackers shares the neighbourhood with many small business run by young people who have taken to the task of renovating old buildings to house their projects, so if you want to know where to go, the hostel staff can set you in the right direction.

At the hostel, you will be sharing the shower room with other guests as none of the rooms have private bathrooms. The showers are pretty normal and you’ll have no trouble staying clean here. Still, if you want to keep the “local” feel alive through your stay, we highly recommend you grab the charming bathing kit provided by 1166 and make use (at least at night) of Kame No Yu Sento, a traditional sento bath around the corner from the hostel.

The sento is not to be confused with an onsen bath as it does not use hot spring water, but the jacuzzi-liked hot baths are just as relaxing. At Kame No Yu there is also a sauna on the underground floor in case the baths are not hot enough for you. This is a Japanese tradition that is slowly disappearing and getting a chance to experience it will make your visit to Nagano extra special.
