Sado has an excellent ring road that runs along the coast of the entire island that makes for a very beautiful drive and a good way to familiarize yourself with the many different parts of the island. Expect the ride to consume the better part of an entire day with time to stop off and explore some places on foot.

Start at Ryotsu, the town where the ferries and jetfoils from Niigata arrive, and head north along the scenic coastline. There are many spots along the way worth stopping at. The most eye-catching is Benteniwa, a tiny islet just a stone’s throw from the shore where a lone pine grows.
Continue north up to the tip of the island, turn west and drive for another kilometer or so until you eventually reach the famous rock of Futatsugame. The area’s beautiful beach and retro resort hotel make it a charming stop off.
Proceed to the southwest of the island, past the impressive grassy hill of Onogame and continue south. Eventually you will reach the beautiful Senkaku-wan Bay, a scenic spot where steep cliffs meet the crystal clear sea. The surrounding area is a marine park, and there are companies organizing tours through the bay in glass-bottomed boats.
Head further down south all the way to Ogi, located at the southwestern tip of the island. En route you will pass the Sobama beach resort, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Ogi is a picturesque little town worth a stroll, as is the nearby old shipbuilding town of Shukunegi.
Continue towards the east and later up north along the ring road and you’ll eventually be back at Ryotsu. On your way there you’ll pass Iwakubi, a small-town famous for its picturesque terraced rice fields climbing up the hillside; a perfect spot to finish your tour of Sado Island.
