Clematis no Oka is a facility that overlooks the Izu mountains to the southeast and Mount Fuji to the northwest. Split into two areas, Clematis comprises a number of museums and restaurants as well as its unmissable gardens which are home to an array of beautiful flowers. Opened to the public in April 2002, this all-encompassing art resort has grown in size and popularity which has resulted in the creation of a free shuttle bus which offers visitors easy access in spite of its location off the beaten track in the luscious Mount Fuji foothills.

With the gardens one of the main draws to the facility, the busiest periods are during May and June when the vibrant pink and purple clematis flowers are in full bloom. While the gardens are at their peak during springtime, there’s still plenty to see throughout the rest of the year with the autumnal colours seeping in from October and incredible views of the snow-capped mountains in winter.

Art enthusiasts, rejoice. Clematis no Oka does art the proper way with a wide range of reflective works of art to discover across both areas. Visit the Bernard Buffet Museum for expressionist paintings from France while learning about the works of Japanese author Yasushi Inoue housed in the same museum. Next, head to the Izu Photo Museum for a fusion of old and contemporary photography before finishing off at the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum for an outdoor exhibition of thought-provoking sculptures from Italian sculptor Giuliano Vangi.

Entry into the museums will set you back between 500 and 1,200 yen for an adult’s ticket but a museum pass will give you access to all four for 3,000 yen or a combination of a couple of museums and the gardens for 2,000 yen.

While you won’t find many places to eat in the surroundings of Clematis no Oka, the handful of restaurants and cafes on the grounds are sure to not disappoint. Following the European theme of much of the artwork, there are two Italian restaurants offering high quality pizza and pasta dishes. For authentic Japanese food head to Tessen which serves up delicious dishes including teppanyaki grilled food, bento lunch options, and the unmissable kaiseki, a series of beautifully prepared courses. Just looking for an afternoon tea break? Enjoy Japanese sweets in the tea house or sit outside at The Gardener’s House which is enveloped in greenery.

Just off the Shin-Tomei Expressway, access to Clematis no Oka by car is simple and signposted, while those coming in by public transport will find a handy, free shuttle bus running directly to the facility from Mishima Station, which makes it the ideal trip from Izu. Take the Shinkansen Exit to the North Entrance and take the bus from bus stop number 3. The shuttle bus also runs between the garden area and the museum area if you don’t fancy the 15-minute walk between the two.
