The most well trodden area of the coast is the hiking trail leading up to the Kadowakizaki Suspension Bridge. The 23-meter long and 48-meter high bridge gives visitors an impressive vantage point for really soaking in the coast’s surroundings. Also located nearby sits a little more humble lighthouse that is open to the public free of charge.

Known to the locals as ‘the eye of Izu’, Lake Ippekiko is a great location for watching the leaves turn fiery orange during the kouyou (autumn leaves) season. Though the length of the lake’s walking trail is only around 4km, it’s recommended you put aside a few hours for a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge and truly soak in the stunning surrounds. Getting to Lake Ippekiko is quite easy, it’s around 20 minutes by car from JR Ito Station. If you’re getting around by public transport take a Tokai Bus for Shaboten Park from Ito Station and hop off at Ippeki-ko bus stop.

Located to the eastern coast of Ito sits Mount Omuro, known to the locals as Ōmuroyama. It’s actually an extinct volcano and one of the area’s main natural attractions. What’s so special about Ōmuroyama is the fact that it’s shaped like an inverted rice bowl, the silhouette of which you can see all around the Izu Kogen (highlands) area. The best way to explore the mountain is by taking the chairlift to the top of the mountain, from there you can head along the easy walking path and soak up the incredible 360° panoramic view of Izu Peninsula.
