Trekking Through Izu's Mountains
  • Though it’s overflowing with healing onsens, delicious seafood, and some of the country’s most stunning beaches, Izu’s scenic beauty is one of the key elements that has made the peninsula such a popular peaceful getaway. Getting around by bicycle and car is definitely a popular option when it comes to checking out the area’s sites, but if you really want to explore the depths of this stunning pocket of Japan you’ve really got to get off the wheels and go by foot. From breathtaking waterfalls and stunning coastlines, Izu is filled with some of the best trekking, hiking, and walking paths no matter your fitness level. Here are just a few to add to your itinerary.

For the occasional walker who doesn’t know where to start, it’s worth checking out the Izu Geotrail walk guide. Snaking around the coastline, up mountain pathways, and through historic towns, there’s no better way to explore Izu on foot. The Izu Geo Trail trek is a seven-day, six-night walking tour that began in November 2016. You can join the tour for 372,000 yen per person which includes six nights’ accommodation, six breakfasts and six evening meals, travel from tour start point to finish. Private tours are also available on request. If a full week long tour is too much you can make a series of much smaller day or afternoon trips.

Jogasaki Coast is located in the Izu Kogen area, around 10 kilometers south of central Ito in the northeast of the peninsula. Lined with a hiking trail that follows the coast for about 10 kilometers, the coastline’s fascinating rock formations and jagged cliffs are what makes this walk so unique. Given that the Jogasaki trail runs all the way along the coast you can get on or get off the path essentially anytime, depending on what you want to see. The most popular section of the trail is home to the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge, here you can admire the ferocity of the ocean below as it crashes white waves against the grey stone cliff faces.

Shaped like an inverted rice bowl, looking over Ito and wider Izu from Omuro Mountain is a fantastic way to explore the area from a different perspective. Sitting at 580 meters high, the only way to get to the top is via a chair lift up the mountain. Once you’re at the top you take the 15 to 30-minute walk around the crater because from there you can see Mount Fuji and Oshima Island on a clear day.

Another location to add to your list is Kawazu Nanadaru. The Kawazu Nanadaru are actually a collection of seven waterfalls situated in the mountains of Kawazu Town in southeastern Izu. Weaving throughout the mountainside is a pathway that will take you to the area’s stunning falls. Ranging from the giant 30-meter tall Odaru (large waterfall) to the much more humble two-meter Kanidaru (crab waterfall) there’s plenty to explore throughout this one-kilometer walk.

If you really want to see what natural beauty Izu has to offer Namesawa-keikoku Gorge is one site you cannot miss. Located in the very heart of Izu Yugashima, the area is also known as Namesawa Valley. It’s here in this valley that the Namezawa River the Hontani River and the Kano River come together to create something very special. If you’re going during the autumn/fall period, get that camera charged up because this is one of the best kouyou (autumn leaf) viewing locations in all of Japan.
