A Taste of Iwate’s Craft Beer

The Brewers of Hiraizumi is the new kid on the block. A collaboration between Kura Beer of Iwate and Anchor Coffee of Miyagi, this stylish cafe is a great addition to the restaurant square packed with soba shops just outside Chuson-ji temple, and is the go-to place in the area for craft beer.

Kura Beer is a cooperative brewery offering a tasty range of brews including Ales, Pilsner, and Stouts. If you want unpasteurized and unfiltered beer, then this is it. A pint at The Brewers tastes even better when you pair it with their succulent beer-glazed pork, the curry, or their grilled sausages.

Next stop is Kitakami. Up the road from Hiraizumi, this city is particularly famous for the sakura that bloom in Tenshochi Park, one of the top hundred cherry blossom view locations in the country. At Robin Hood Pub in central Kitakami you’ll find sakura doesn’t grow on trees but brewed and served as a pint.

Sakura Ale, the brainchild of Stephen Butland - a British brewer residing in Kitakami, is the tastiest draft in town. Besides Tenshochi Sakura Ale, Stephen brews a lineup that includes the Onikenbai Red Ale, the Water Lily Lager, the Geto Dry Stout, and the White Honey Ale, all made with local ingredients and inspired by local traditions. Robin Hood Pub offers the British pub experience and is the perfect spot in town to relax after a long day of sightseeing. You can also find Stephen at the Craft Beer Fest in Akita City during the summer.

You can end the craft beer journey with a few pints of Baeren Beer in Morioka City. This hundred-year old brewery has been serving traditional European style beer throughout its history and is definitely a local favourite. Baeren means bear in German and was chosen to reflect Iwate’s nature and the hard-working craftsmen the city is known for.

Baeren’s beer lineup includes the classics such as Alt and Schwarzs, a long list of seasonal brews including a chocolate stout, and a series of fruit beers. Stroll around Morioka and you’ll be sure to find one of Baeren’s colourful labels at bars and pubs around town. Three places in particular where you can taste this refreshing beer are the pub Sundance, Nikkate Piano Bar, and Kumagai Ryokan. If your stay is short and you can’t find an a chance to try a pint at one of the city bars, no need to worry!
